About

Chris Battle was diagnosed with kidney cancer in March of 2009 and died from the disease on August 8, 2013. This blog began as a way to keep friends and family updated about his health situation but gained a global following over time.

Since Chris’s passing in 2013, treatments for RCC have advanced significantly. Immunotherapies, targeted treatments, and combination therapies have improved outcomes for many patients. Despite these advancements, the way Chris chose to share his experience—using humor to cope with the fear and uncertainty of cancer—continues to inspire people today. His story serves as a reminder of the power of humor, courage, and human connection, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.

How it all began…

CaringBridge Post by Chris Battle, December 2009

I’m blond, good looking and a fighter pilot, sensitive but strong and can cry while riding a bull. I’m into rich women. Oh, wait. I’ve just been told this is not an online dating site for cancer patients.

My story is that I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in March 2009. After surgery I was told I was cured … until I wasn’t; the cancer spread to my lungs in November.

I have the most loving wife in the world who needs support from her friends and family during this time. She and my two beautiful little girls will sustain me through whatever comes next. I am grateful for the legion of family, both mine and Dena’s, and all of our friends

Dena and I will try to keep everybody up to date here as best we can.
